Anything Helps (2014)

Black & white charcoal on black paper (17.5x22”)

I made this drawing my senior year of high school. My teacher challenged us to draw something emotionally impactful. Every Sunday we would pass homeless folks on the way to church just off of I-25 and Hampden. I asked this woman if she would allow me to take her photo, she agreed. She was staring into the sun, so we left her with some sunglasses and a bit of cash. I still think about her, I wonder if she’s okay. The wrinkles on her face and the kindness in her smile tell a story that is hard to put into words.
